Kai

RETIRED

K-9 Kai is a German Shepherd.  He joined the Alliance Police Department in 2003 when it was determined that the department could add a second dual-purpose K9 to the patrol ranks for free. K9 Kai came from the Smith Township Police Department.  He had been with the Smith Twp Police Department and partnered with Officer Paul Vesco since 1997.  When Officer Vesco left the Smith Twp Police Department and joined the Alliance Police Department, K9 Kai came with him.

Kai was trained in narcotic detection and also had a list of skills that included tracking persons, building and area searches for persons, evidence searches, criminal apprehension, and officer protection. He performed drug detection and patrol functions as part of the afternoon shift.  He was always on call to assist other shifts and APD divisions, and was often called on by other agencies to assist them.

Kai's favorite duty was criminal apprehension. Many times he was called on to find suspects who had fled to elude capture, resulting in many felony arrests.  Kai was successful in apprehending numerous dangerous subjects who led police on pursuits and fled out of stolen vehicles.  K9 Kai also assisted fellow officers in apprehending subjects who resisted and fought with officers.

K9 Kai worked well with K9 Zeus.  Together they conducted drug searches of residences, vehicles and schools.  K9 Kai and Zeus even tracked and located missing children.

K9 Kai loved performing public demonstrations as well.  He loved biting "bad guys" while they wore the bite-protective training suit.  Even after catching the bad guys, Kai always enjoyed visiting with the children.  He would roll on his back and loved having his belly scratched.

Kai retired from the Alliance Police Department in October 2005. He was replaced by K9 OZ.
